Young adults with cancer report feeling isolated, lonely and overwhelmed. They face many unique challenges related to their young age at diagnosis and possible stages of life. From being a 30-year-old feeling out of place in a body that has already experienced menopause to being overwhelmed with making decisions about fertility preservation, young adults experience cancer differently—those with metastatic cancer report struggling with living in the moment or planning for an uncertain future.
These experiences and feelings are valid, but they are not talked about enough. Young adult cancer survivors and thrivers need to feel supported and know that they are not alone. Healthcare professionals need to know how to support their patients who are navigating cancer at a young age. Young adults need to know about their breast cancer risk.
To address these needs, the Program for Breast Cancer in Young Adults will host their 2nd Annual Young Breast Cancer Symposium on Saturday, February 24, 2024, from 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM ET. This virtual event will feature two panels of survivors and thrivers who will share their personal experiences with cancer as young adults. The keynote session will address mental health and finding meaning after a cancer diagnosis. Symposium breakout sessions will cover various topics, including young breast cancer risk, navigating insurance and legal challenges, parenting with cancer, clinical trials and more.
This symposium is FREE and open to ALL. It offers learning opportunities tailored towards survivors, thrivers, community health workers, health care professionals and anyone interested in learning more about breast cancer. While the focus is young breast cancer, many of the topics that will be discussed are relevant to people who are impacted by different cancer types, regardless of their age.
Approval is currently pending (with more information to come) regarding FREE continuing education credits for physicians (CME), nurses, social workers and community health workers. Certificates of attendance will be available for all attendees upon request.
