Inherited gene mutations cause approximately 10% of cancers, but up to 90% of people who have an inherited mutation aren’t aware of their risk or their medical options. During National Hereditary Cancer Week (NHCW) and National Previvor Day, FORCE’s main goal is to increase public awareness about hereditary cancer and its risk factors.
Each year, FORCE is proud to lead this national movement by providing trusted information, expert resources and a strong voice in support of those navigating inherited gene mutations linked to cancer.
This year, NHCW is September 28 - October 4, and National Previvor Day is October 1.
National Hereditary Cancer Week: A Time to Raise Awareness
NHCW was established by Congress in 2010 as “National Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Week and National Previvor Day.” In 2020, FORCE renamed the week to recognize and support people affected by different hereditary cancers. By raising awareness and advocating for genetic counseling and testing when it is appropriate, we can narrow the gap and empower individuals and families facing hereditary cancer to make informed medical decisions.
National Previvor Dayrecognizes those with an inherited mutation who have never been diagnosed with cancer. These individuals face complex decisions about surveillance and risk reduction, and FORCE is here to support them every step of the way. On Previvor Day, we honor their journeys by sharing stories from our community and reminding the public that awareness can save lives. Access our previvor resources to learn more.
