The purpose of the PREVAIL study is to evaluate a genetic education video that will deliver information about genetic testing for African American men in a relatable way and increase access to genetic testing. African American men with cancer or with a strong family history of cancer may be eligible for the study. Participants can choose to view the video or see a genetic counselor before making a decision for genetic testing. The entire study can be completed remotely for participants from specific states. The goals of the study are to ensure that videos are an effective way to deliver genetic information to African American males, help with decision-making for cancer genetic testing, and ultimately improve access to genetic testing.
This Study is Open To:
African American men with cancer, or with a strong family history of cancer, who live in the following states may be eligible to participate:
- Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Kansas, Maine, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Texas, Vermont, West Virginia, Wyoming
This Study is NOT Open To:
Men who do not live in any of the above states or who have had prior genetic counseling or genetic testing for risk are not eligible to participate.
Your participation in the study will involve:
- Completing a questionnaire electronically online, which asks general questions about you as well as your cancer beliefs/perceptions, and genetic knowledge and awareness.
- Receiving genetic education, which will be your choice to either meet with a genetic counselor or to watch a short (6 minute) genetic education video that was created for this study.
- Completing a follow-up questionnaire online electronically, which has questions about your decision whether or not to have genetic testing, satisfaction with genetic education, and knowledge. We ask these questions because we are studying whether the video will be useful to deliver genetic education and expand access to genetic testing.
- You will receive $25 for each questionnaire that you complete.
- If you choose to have genetic testing, you will provide a blood or saliva sample for gene panel testing (provided cost-free).
- When the results return, a member of the study team will discuss them with you and explain what they mean for you and your family.
- Your results will be sent to your doctor as well to help with your care.
